William Slim (1891 - 1970)

Army general and governor general of Australia

William Slim, fondly known as Uncle Bill, had strategic brilliance and stirring charisma, as well as the heart of a soldier. Born in Bishopston, he fought in both the First and Second World Wars and was wounded in action three times. In command of the 14th (Forgotten) Army during the Burma campaign of 1942-45, he turned a disastrous situation into an awe-inspiring victory.
