Handel Cossham (1824-1890)
Mine owner, lay preacher and Liberal politician
When Handel Cossham died, 30,000 people lined the streets of Bristol to pay homage to his contribution to the city. A benevolent employer, he built houses and a school for his workers. He was the first MP for Bristol East, having already served as a local councillor in St Paul’s. Cossham Hospital in Kingswood was built with money he left for the purpose.
