This cat shaped box is hollow and contains a mummified kitten. It was x-rayed in 2005 to confirm the contents.
Two main species of cat are known from ancient Egypt; the swamp or jungle cat and the African wild cat. Both species were mummified during the first millenium BC, though the majority of examples identified so far have been African wild cats.
Cats were mummified as offerings to the cat goddess, Bastet. She was the local deity in the town of Bubastis, where this coffin is said to come from.
