From about 2,700 years ago, cats were bred, killed and mummified at certain temples. Pilgrims to these temples could buy a mummified animal to give it as an offering to the god. These offerings were buried together at the temple. At some temples millions of mummified animals or birds have been found.

Sometimes bundles were assembled that didn't contain whole cats but they were made to look like they did for sale. This mummy could be a partially disarticulated skeleton that has been remodelled to appear more like a cat. The x-rays show extensive disruption to the skull, a collapsed thorax, a fractured forelimb and some ribs in the neck region. The CT images show evidence of rolls of fabric within the mumy bundle.
