Hawks fascinated the ancient Egyptians because of their ability to soar through the air so high that they would disappear from sight, maybe into the world of the sky-gods.

Hawks were worshipped and mummified throughout ancient Egypt. They were sold to temple visitors by priests, to be given as offerings to the bird headed god Horus. He was revered as god of the sky and as a protector of the Pharaoh.
