To get past the censor 2nd Lieutenant Guthrie Watson Williams devised a code so that he could tell his parents where he was. Letters from officers often included long lists of ‘wants’, as their parents could supply them with rat traps, warm clothing, food treats or anything else they needed. BRO 41987
