Leonard Hill joined the Canadian Mounted Rifles (‘Canada’s Crack Cavalry Corps’) when war started. During fighting on the Somme, his officer was killed and Corporal Leonard Hill took charge of the men. He was promoted to Sergeant for this action. He decided to return to Bristol after the war.
