VAD Uniform, about 1916
VADs worked in local hospitals alongside trained nurses and doctors. They did menial tasks such as cleaning and rolling up bandages, as well as talking to the wounded servicemen. One wounded Australian soldier at Bishop’s Knoll Hospital in Bristol wrote a poem in 1917 praising VADs as ‘pillow-smoothers’.
