By 1917, nearly 300 women were employed as tram conductors in Bristol Known as ‘clippies’, this was the first time women had worked on the trams. They received one week’s training. Some were promoted to inspectors, but no women were allowed to drive the trams. Bristol Record Office 43207/9/5/92
