’The Glorious dead, 1914-1918’ The Soldiers’ Corner memorial in Arnos Vale cemetery Many men and women who died in the First World war are buried in cemeteries across Bristol. Some are Bristolians, such as Lieutenant-Colonel Daniel Burges of the Gloucestershire Regiment and the South Wales Borderers Regiment, who was awarded the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Service Order medals for gallantry. Others are men from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, who died in Bristol’s war hospitals. In cemeteries and church graveyards across Bristol, the graves of those who died are marked by an Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commission headstone of white Portland stone.
