In 1920 Bristol ‘adopted’ the northern French town of Bethune, which had been ravaged by the war, with nearly all the houses damaged or destroyed. By 1922 Bristol people had raised nearly £6,000 to build 16 houses in Bethune for the widows and children of French soldiers killed in the war.
