Funerals are typically held to commemorate the dead, and to lay the body to rest. Practices from around the world and through time vary considerably. In the UK today the time between death and burial or cremation usually takes no longer than one to two weeks. In other countries funeral rites can take a long time to prepare and can happen weeks or months later.
