Wilde died in 1900. His body was buried in the Cimetière de Bagneux in Paris; nine years later his remains were transferred to Père Lachaise Cemetery. Wilde’s lover, Robert Ross, commissioned the tomb and gave instructions that a compartment within the tomb be made for his own ashes. Ross died in 1918, and in 1950 his ashes were finally placed in Wilde's tomb.
