Many ancient societies would bury their dead in underground chambers, but from about 125 AD the first large scale catacombs were created on the outskirts of Rome. They were dug into the soft rock underneath the main roads leading out of the city as burial was not allowed within the city walls. They cover an area of almost two and a half square miles and were mostly used for Christian burials at a time when Christianity was not a recognised religion.
