The merchant William Canynges was one of the richest men in England when he died. His funeral took place in Bristol in 1474, and this picture was painted much later, so it may not reflect what actually happened. The body is laid out in full view on a raised platform. Children are present and the crowd wears colourful clothes, although in Europe black has been worn for mourning for over 2,000 years.
