From the Ejagham people, Southern Nigeria (late 1800's). In the Ejagham culture burial must take place within 24 hours of death, then a period of 12 to 21 days of mourning is followed by a three day 'grand funeral'. The more important the deceased, the grander the funeral. Most adults belong to societies or associations. Members from the deceased's society will dance at the funeral wearing these skin-covered masks. The masks represent respected ancestors and help the deceased to move towards the land of the dead.
