From the Tabar Islands, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea (1980's). Funerary rituals known as Malangan honour the dead and complete the funerary ceremonies, up to five years after the death. Male relatives wear masks during the ceremonies: this type of mask is worn to remove the restrictions imposed on people by the death, such as not eating certain foods. The Malangan carvings are displayed after the ceremonies, but at the end of the mourning period they are destroyed or left to rot (or sold to tourists), as the spirit of the person has gone.
