From the Akan people, Ghana (early 1900's). In the days following a death elaborate funeral activities take place including processions, the giving of gifts of money, drumming and dancing. Ceremonies of remembrance take place eight, 40 and 80 days, and one year, after the death. From at least the 1700's, after the burial, the Akan people placed clay memorial heads or figures in sacred areas of cemeteries. A chief would have images of his household to ensure that he was accompanied in death by all his wives, officials and servants.
