From Japan (2004). In Japan guests at a wake bring money in special envelopes as a way of offering their condolences. The amount of koden varies according to the relationship with the deceased, with more for a family member than for a neighbour, for example. In return, guests are given a gift as thanks for their support. Within the Buddhist ritual, services for the dead are held following the death and a celebration for the mourners on the 49th day. Other services of remembrance are held on the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 12th, 16th, 32nd and 49th anniversaries of the death.
