Probably from Turkey (around 1670 - 1700). High status people in the Ottoman Empire would sometimes drape their coffins with ornate shawls for the funeral. These were then used to cover the tombs that were built within free-standing mausoleums. This textile includes quotes about Muslim beliefs and prayers from the Koran. Islamic practices would usually outlaw displays of wealth and social status in funeral rites. However ornate tombstones and elaborate coverings became very popular in this region during this period.
