This is a plaster copy of a face mask of a famous Maori chief, made in the mid-1800's. Westerners were fascinated by the facial tattoos of the Maoris and collected preserved heads of their dead. Many museums, including Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, kept these heads in their collections. In the last few years many have been returned to their descendants in New Zealand.
