Most Victorian carved-ivory jewellery was produced in France, at Dieppe. Swiss and German craftsmen also specialised in this difficult material and their work flourished between c. 1830 - 1870. Stags in a forest setting were specially popular. The bracelet, cuff studs and silver- mounted mask remind us of the continuing ivory-carving tradition in Japan and (the bracelet) in India throughout the nineteenth century.
