Barbara Hepworth was one of the first British artists to make Abstract art. Winged Figure is the model for the iconic aluminium sculpture she designed for John Lewis's store on Oxford Street, London. It combines modern forms and materials in a sculpture that looks to a technological future. Pierced holes show the relationship between inside and outside. The inner surface texture was achieved using filler material for dented car panels. The threaded strings create tension between the centre and the wings.
