Picasso was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, inspiring the work of a whole generation of artists, including many who have prints in Bristol's collection, such as David Hockney and Ceri Richards. Picasso's innovative approach to art techniques, pushed the boundaries of sculpture, painting and printmaking. He made prints throughout his career and used the flexibility of the medium to try out new ideas leading to some of the finest examples of lithography in the 20th century. The highly decorative Au Balcon shows the fluidity of lines that look like an ink or pencil drawing a technique only achievable using the lithography method.
