Ceri Richards was born in Wales in 1903 and studied at the Royal College of Art with Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden, under the supervision of Henry Moore and Paul Nash. Richards was deeply influenced by Picasso in all areas of his practice, exploring forms in a Cubist style, experimenting with lithography and blurring the lines between drawing and printmaking by incorporating gouache (an opaque watercolour wash) into his prints.Trafalgar Square is based on a painting Richards produced in 1950. The composition and density of the black lines mirror Picasso's lithographic style.
