David Nash (born 1945) is a British sculptor and land artist. Land artists usually create sculptures directly in the landscape using the land itself and the natural materials within it such as rocks, stones, trees and plants. Nash's favourite material is fresh, unseasoned wood. Early in his career Nash used traditional tools but later also started working with chainsaws. Cracking Box forms part of a series of wooden boxes made by Nash from 1979 onwards. Depending on environmental circumstances they warp and crack in different ways.
