This representation of the HIV virus was designed in consultation with virologists from the University of Bristol. It was made in collaboration with the glass blower Kim George. Luke Jerram is a sculptor based in Bristol whose work combines science, technology and art. He makes large-scale installations and produces live art projects such as Sky Orchestra, which delivers music for sleeping people from hot air balloons. HIV. 2004 was made in response to the misleading, artificially coloured images of viruses which are constantly reproduced in the media. No larger than a tennis ball, it was meant to be held in one hand, in order to contemplate the impact of the disease upon humanity.
