For most of the King's African Rifles’ history (from 1902 to the 1960s), the rank and file troops were composed of local African soldiers, whilst officers were seconded from other British regiments.
The exceptions to this were Sudanese officers, such as those pictured here. They led a platoon of Sudanese soldiers in the 4th (Uganda) Battalion until the end of WW1.
