This banner was used by the Bristol branch of the Docks Wharf Riverside & General Workers’ Union (the Dockers’ Union for short!) around 1890.
It shows dockers engaged in different work at several Bristol locations. In the middle is F. Gilmore Martin, a Bristol solicitor and radical Liberal councillor who was very supportive of organised labour. The banner dates from around 1890, when there was much unionisation and strike action, particularly in the docks.
The other side shows the Corporation granary that stood on the site of M Shed until it was bombed in World War II.
