The Forshaw family lived in Shanghai from 1908 to 1940. Their home was in the international settlement and George Forshaw worked for the Asiatic Petroleum Company in the centre of the city.

Here, the four eldest Forshaw children are hoisting the British flag in their front garden. The caption to the photograph notes that the flagpole had to be removed in 1929 after “anti-foreign riots.”
