This photograph was taken shortly before many Westerners left Shanghai as a result of the escalating conflict between China and Japan.

George Forshaw volunteered as an official for both the cricket club and the Shanghai Football Association. The club honoured him with a farewell dinner before the family returned to the UK. Shanghai, like many colonial cities, also boasted clubs for bowls, tennis and swimming. These were primarily social hubs for the White British community.
