Alfred Tamlin worked as a mahogany trader in Ghana, West Africa, after WW1. He took this photograph at a sports event organised for local African people.

Many British people believed that sport would teach “British” values such as fair play to their colonial subjects. British and indigenous people alike were expected to celebrate Empire Day in May each year.

In this photograph, colonial officials such as the Chief Commissioner (front centre) are pictured alongside local dignitaries including the Mensa of Kumasi (front right). With them are representatives of the military, local government departments and local businesses.
