George Golledge was manager of a tea plantation in Ceylon. This is one of a number of photographs taken on a day out with his wife at the racecourse.

Newspaper reports from the time describe the mix of races and classes who frequented race meetings. This was also true in other colonial cities, such as Nairobi. This photograph shows both British and Sri Lankan people milling around in their best attire.
