Cider making involves science, hard work, and heritage. Most people only encounter the end product but the process involves growing, harvesting and brewing apples on farms and orchards, and a lot of research.

Wassailing is an ancient tradition to ward off bad spirits and give offerings (often toast hung on branches) to the apple tree spirits. It is still practiced in a few places in Bristol, such as Boiling Wells and Fishponds Community Orchard.

Long Ashton Research Station was created to study and improve the West Country cider industry. It operated from 1903-1985.

The Fishponds orchard was created in 2005 to provide a resource for local people and to help preserve traditional varieties of apples.

Pubs and bars renowned for their cider in Bristol include The Orchard Inn, The Apple, The Stable and the Coronation Tap. The latter opened 30 years before the Clifton Suspension Bridge did!
