Following flooding at Baptist Mills in 1885 Mr Thomas Massey of Rose Cottage wrote to the Bristol Mercury newspaper asking for financial aid for his less fortunate neighbours. He claimed that 'The floods caused by the recent heavy rains have brought distress and discomfort to the homes of the very poor of the district' and asked whether 'any of your many benevolent readers who can afford to give subscribe towards their relief?'
