The crew of a slave ship was mostly local, but often included men from other countries. Some were free Africans, such as John Quaco of Pipe Lane, Bristol. He was never out of work for 21 years, and crewed on several slaving ships. The ships' muster roll, drawn up for the Seaman's Hospital insurance fund, gives details of the crew.
