Every craft was controlled by a guild, with the rules set by the masters of the guild. Leatherworkers belonged to the Guild of Cordwainers.

It is rare for organic materials such as wood and leather to survive for long in the soil. These tooled knife sheaths were found whilst excavating the medieval dockside, and survived for 600 years because they were waterlogged, which stops decay.
