Europeans saw drums as subversive, and on some islands forbade drumming exceptat Christmas. Drumming and dancing were part of a new religion, voudon. This came from a mix of the traditional religious beliefs of the enslaved Africans with Catholic beliefs on the French and Spanish islands.
