This is an elm corner bracket, in the shape of a 'satyr' which came from the front of the Cat and Wheel public house on the corner of Castle Green and Little Peter Street. The building was constructed in the 1600s but was demolished in 1900 and replaced with a new pub of the same name owned by George's Brewery. Satyrs were, according to Greek mythology, woodland creatures with the pointed ears, legs and short horns of a goat and who were companions of the Greek god of wine and entertainment, Dionysus - which makes this one highly appropriate for a pub.
