Jean Wookey had fun celebrating the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 with her family and neighbours at a street party on Southmead Road, Bedminster. A huge amount of preparation was involved and the excitement increased as the road itself was closed-off for the whole day.
'Weeks went into planning the day, everyone just mucked in to help.'
The whole street was covered in bunting. 'There was lots of crepe paper hung up everywhere so it was lovely and colourful. People even hung up old knickers and bras along the street.'
She recalls how, 'the kerbstones were painted red, white and blue - the paint stayed on for ages until the rain washed it away.'
Neighbours came from adjacent streets. 'Everyone was welcome to come along, nobody was turned away.'
Tables were placed along the entire length of the road and people sat down to eat a feast of sandwiches, fairy cakes, jelly and blancmange.
'We sang lots of songs - I particularly remember all the old war songs went down very well. Someone made a big cake and everyone tried to get a piece, but it only went so far, there were just so many people.'
'All in all it was a lovely day. It definitely brought the community together to an extent that I just don't think you would see today.'
