The Avonmouth smelter (the only one in Britain after 1920) processed zinc ore from Australia. Thousands of tons of this ore came into the port at Avonmouth between 1920 and 2003, when the plant closed.

Zinc is a component in many alloys and is used to galvanise or rust-proof iron.
