A 600 cc motorbike, 'OW1' made in 1934 by the Douglas Engineering Company based in Kingswood Bristol. Two former blacksmiths, William and Edward Douglas, founded the company in 1882 and it manufactured motorcycles from 1907 until 1957.
The machine is of the 'Overhead Valve' type introduced 'for the benefit of the speed man'. It was intended for fast touring and 'snappy runs' with a horizontally opposed twin cylinder engine. It was claimed that the engine was an almost exact replica of those that were proposed for use in aeroplanes at that time. Its brochure price was 58 pounds
Motorbikes were popular between the two World Wars, because they were an affordable alternative to the motorcar.
