Paul's favourite cinema was the Gaiety, on the Wells Road in Knowle. On Saturdays they watched children's films and travelogues 'which introduced us to Dwile Flonking in Dorset and The Wild Astrakhan Hunters of the Uzbekistan Mountains...God they did go on.' Then there were the Pearl and Dean adverts, 'How we jeered when the local greasy spoon was plugged with shots of a sophisticated restaurant.' Later came the discovery of girls and the competition to secure the back row seats, 'The trend towards hooped skirts and layer upon layer of petticoats was disastrous for any males with their minds on anything but the film.'
Dennis also has fond memories of going to the cinema in the 1950s. 'His Majesty's cinema near the old Bristol Rovers ground at Eastville was a favourite because it was the only cinema in Bristol with double seats, which was very nice when you were with your girlfriend.'
He also remembers having to travel to Weston Super Mare to watch the film 'Rock around the Clock' starring Bill Haley and the Comets, which was banned in Bristol, 'Everybody was bopping in the aisles, fantastic memory that.'
He regularly attended the ABC Minors Club at the Vandyke Cinema, Fishponds, with his friends when he was younger. The words of the Club's song were projected onto the screen:
'We are the boys and girls well known as Minors of the ABC,
And every Saturday we line up to see the films we like and shout aloud with glee.'
