Travellers on horseback or in horse-drawn vehicles were a common sight in Bristol until the mid-1900s. As with motor vehicles, horses require constant care to keep them roadworthy. Provision for them was available throughout the city, from public stables to tack shops and blacksmiths. This sign is from a smithy which was on the main road alongside St George's Park, Bristol in the early 1900s. Its painted on one side with the image of two men, one working at an anvil and the other holding two horses waiting to be shod.
