At a ceremony on 15 March 1902, George, Prince of Wales, operated a steam excavator to dig the first sod (or earth) of the Royal Edward Dock. The ceremony was the cause of much public celebration and souvenirs were commissioned for the occasion. This lever was specially made for the Prince of Wales to operate the steam excavator used to cut the first sod.
