This influential Bristolian began her career as a playwright. She also taught at the school she and her sisters founded in Park Street. Later, she became an Evangelical Christian and set up Sunday Schools, wrote religious tracts and campaigned against the slave trade. She worked with the (male) leaders of the Abolition movement, helped plan the campaign and wrote popular poems to attract support. This miniature on ivory shows her as an elderly woman, the period when she was actively campaigning for Abolition.
