Engines above ground were worked hard. They pumped water from the mine, operated cages to transport miners, powered ventilation fans and hauled tubs of coal and tramcars from the pit. Below ground, men worked with pickaxes and spades at the coal face, hewing coal and loading it into baskets, tubs or tramcars pulled by pit horses and small steam engines. This model shows a two-cylinder horizontal steam winding engine once used underground at Deep Pit Colliery, St George, Bristol.
