Whorls like this were attached to drop spindles to provide a combination of the weight and spin needed to make woollen thread by hand. Thread produced like this was then woven into fabric for clothing. Whorls can be made of a variety of materials such as pottery and bone but this one is made of stone and was found at Blaise Castle Hillfort
