Artists and sculptors in ancient Egypt often showed a husband and wife or family group. Children were important. The eldest son was expected to arrange the funeral for his parents. Descendants were needed to keep up the prayers and food offerings for the dead, as once their name was forgotten they ceased to exist in the Afterlife. Husbands and wives are often shown with their arms around each, although whether this reflects real love and affection or an artistic convention we do not know.
