As Lady of the House, a woman was responsible for cooking, washing and cleaning as well as child rearing. Houses were built of mud-brick, and could have two or more storeys. Richer households might have a lot of furniture and possessions, but the majority of Egyptians probably had only the basics. Boxes and baskets were used for storage. Mats covered the floor. Brushes were used against the ever-present sand and dust.
